Description:

A variety of free online tax filing software programs offered by the IRS to taxpayers filing federal individual income tax returns (form 1040 and supporting forms and schedules) and who meet income guidelines (income restrictions differ by software program). Software allows taxpayers to e-file or print returns.
Software programs are interview-based--taxpayers answer a series of questions about their household and income, then software programs will complete the matching tax forms.
Taxpayers may need information from previous year return to complete current year return.

Program Fees:

No fee for taxpayers whose household adjusted gross income (AGI) is at or below the software program's stated limit. Fees vary by software program for taxpayers whose AGI is over the software limit. Fees may also apply for filing state returns.
