Backflow Contamination Prevention

Taxonomy Code: TE-8935.9300-150

Programs that protect the drinking water supply from contamination through unprotected or potential cross-connections between the drinking water and wastewater systems in homes or other buildings and which require the installation of devices to prevent the reverse flow of water. Backflows occur when wastewater from toilets, laundry sinks, heating and cooling systems, outdoor faucets, lawn sprinkling systems and other plumbing systems flows in the wrong direction and backs up into the water distribution system affecting potable water within individual buildings and/or the entire municipal water supply. Included are programs that conduct tests to determine whether there are unprotected or potential cross-connections between the drinking water and wastewater systems in homes and other buildings and/or evaluate existing backflow contamination prevention devices to determine whether they are working properly; programs that install backflow prevention devices; and programs that provide information about the issue of cross-connections and backflow contamination. Local statutes may require the survey of premises at potential risk for backflow contamination, the installation of protective devices and the inspection and testing of the devices on a regular basis.
